Newsletter, February 2009

Dear All,

Despite the seasonal weather which kept us off the site last week, and the forecast of more snow to come, there is plenty to look forward to - see below for our packed programme this month

Tuesday 10th February: Given the forecast and the state the site will be in after all this weather, we've had a change of plan: Join us for a shorter than usual day in the warmth of the Schoolroom at Dacre Top.

We shall start at 10am with a committee meeting to which all are welcome (see attachment for the agenda) and during which we'll look at how the Project is progressing.

We'll follow that from c.10.30am until lunchtime with a look at our Excavation Plan - plenty of photos to see and archaeology to be explored from the warmth of the indoors. Do come along and have a virtual tour of the site!

Tuesday 17th February: Half Term Family Day. Bring the children and enjoy a walk around the site - "attack Mansion Knoll", "discover" features, bring a picnic and enjoy your lunch with a view before heading back down the hill. Wrap everyone up warm and issue them with stout footwear and waterproofs. Please note that children will be the responsibility of their accompanying adult at all times. Meet at 10am at the site.

Tuesday 24th February: Feature Dig day with Kevin Cale. Meet at the schoolroom in Dacre Top at 10am and we shall then head for the site and see what we can unearth.

OTHER EVENTS

Monday 16 February: 7.30pm. Join us for a talk on the Project for the "Nidderdale Society" at the Village Hall in Dacre Banks.

Saturday 21st February: The Project will have a display stand at the Historic Environment Day at the Hambleton Forum in Northallerton where there are talks all day on various local archaeology sites and issues. We shall set up from 9am but the event opens at 9.30 and continues until 4.30pm. So bring your packed lunch (but no need for thermals and waterproofs for once!) and come and join us.

Pre-booking is essential. Simply give the Heritage and Environment Section of North Yorkshire County Council a call on 08458 727374 or email archaeology@northyorks.gov.uk to book a place.

Thursday 26th February:  Talk on "Medieval Iron" for the Washburn Heritage Group at the Robinson Library in Timble. 7.30pm start time. Project members, as ever, are welcome to come along.

And that's just for this month! We hope you can join us for any or all of these days.

All the very best,

Gill

As ever, may we remind you all that the site is on an exposed hillside and waterproofs/suncream and stout footwear are definitely required.

May we stress that the site is on private property with no public right of way - access must be accompanied by a group leader at all times.
