Lamb Close,Wath near Pateley Bridge

This is an iron smelting site recently discovered by the Nidderdale Chase Community Heritage Group on land previously held by Fountains Abbey. The landscape evidence includes two slag heaps, a probable blast furnace site, water management features and an apparent adit that is the likely source of at least some of the ore that was smelted here. There are also other landscape features suggesting the existence of bloomeries that are likely to have pre-dated the blast furnace.
